Author: Robert Griffith, Jr, Phd Turner

Dr. Turner's work
I am a student at Virginia Tech, where Dr. Turner teaches a sociology course. His course is one of the best I have taken. He really knows his subject matter. His book is great! Anyone interested in any part of sociology will love it.

A guide to the Twenty-First Century
THE FIRE AND THE ROSE is the best synthesis of sociology, psychology, and spirituality to appear since the sixties. Turner is a brilliant, compassionate, and transformative writer. His book communicates on many levels and it offers essential instruction for beginners as well as for the most sophisticated readers. Anyone trying to understand the problems facing humanity in the Twenty-First Century will find powerful insights and helpful perspectives in this indispensable volume. (Maurice R. Stein, Jacob S. Fishing With My Old Guy: The Hilarious Quest for the Biggest Speckled Trout in the World
Published in Hardcover by Kodansha International (October, 1996)
Authors: Paul Quarrington and Philip Turner
Average review score:

I are Paul's 'Old Guy'! Great book on a difficult subject.
I am still amazed that Q was able to write such a readable and hillarious book about a trip that turned into a disaster. Only an author blessed with superior skills and humour could pull it off, but he did and 'in spades!' As Q's 'Old Guy' I am putting the finishing touches on a sequel to his book, Fishing With Paul Quarrington by His Old Guy. It delves further into our fishing and casting lives together since we met fifteen years ago and includes Paul's second trip to the Broadback, this time to my territory and with superb fishing.

I are the 'Old Guy'. Great book on a difficult subject!
I talked Paul into making this trip with us. We had fished and worked on his angling skills for over ten years and I felt he was ready to go affter the 'Big One'. Howeverr it was not to be. We ran into just about the worst conditions that anybody could imagine and due to circumstances were unable to go to the Deval territory, one with which I was familiar. I didn't think it was possible for anybody to construct a readable tale as a result of this venture, but Paulie not only pulled it off, but wrote his 'Old Guy' book with all the flair and humour that only a superb author could. I am just putting the finishing touches on a sequel to his wonderful account of that mis-adventure, 'Fishing With Paul Quarrington by His Old Guy'. It fills in the holes that 'Q' left out and includes his next trip with us, this time into my territory and with superb fishing.

Gardening Indoors, New Revised
Published in Paperback by Van Patten Pub (01 June, 1995)
Authors: George F. Van Patten, D. B. Turner, and Ann Lovejoy
Average review score:

A great book for gardening indoors with H.I.D. Lights.
Gardening Indoors should be considered the bible for indoor gardening. It has a chapter dedicated to the important topic of lighting. It compares different garden light systems including High Intensity Discharge lights such as High Pressure Sodium and Metal Halide lights as well as different types of fluorescent lighting. This book also contains extensive information on controlled environments including temperature, humidity, and even the potential for Carbon Dioxide enrichment and its benefits. Gardening Indoors also has an excellent chapter on hydroponics. It talks about water and fertilizers, natural pest control, and organics. Anyone growing anything from orchids to vegetables indoors should have this book.

excellent book, reccommend to any drug grower
i used this book as a guideline for growing my dope crop over the last 16 months now. so far ive had 4 successful crops each in excess of ten pounds of head, and thats with only four plants! the methods described in this book are also great for the home grower as you no longer need worry about snoopers in your backyard because noone but you knows what's in your cupboard (be careful though the electricity co. might get sus.) in summary i reccommend this book to anyone interested in home hydro, as i said it certainly helped me!

Georgia O'Keeffe: The Poetry of Things
Published in Paperback by Phillips Collections (April, 1999)
Author: Elizabeth Hutton Turner
Average review score:

wonderful gift
I sent this book as a gift, based on the glowing review on this page. My donee/friend wrote: "What a wonderful surprise and delight the O'Keefe book has brought me today! It is indeed something very special, with elegant color illustrations, plus many photos from various times of her life, and biographical details all through the text. There is a wonderful photo of her (by Ansel Adams) -- she wears a dark sweater, and is sitting, sketching, at the rocky entrance to what may be a cave --- and all of her design ideas seem to be there in the photo: her own interesting form, contrasts of dark and light, austerity yet beautiful rhythms....I had no idea what a pathfinder she was, going her own road by interpreting objects in an entirely personal way. Everything has her magic touch. The color plates are excellent." I have her permission to send these comments to you.

Outstanding book from an outstanding exhibition
This is the companion catalog to the O'Keeffe exhibition at the Phillips gallery in Washington, DC, and is a wonderful volume on O'Keeffe whether or not you were fortunate enough to see this exhibition. What impressed me most about the exhibition (and the book) is how intelligently it was put together. It examines O'Keeffe's development as an artist by tracking both her philosphy and her influences, and some rarely shown works were chosen to represent this in the exhibition (and are reproduced in the book). Of all the books on O'Keeffe that I've read, and of all the exhibitions I've seen of her work, this one by far does the best job of explaining both the artist and her work.

Hadean Eclogues
Published in Paperback by Consortium Book Sales & Dist (15 July, 1999)
Author: Frederick Turner
Average review score:

Combination of Contemporary and Classic
For the most part, I do not care for contemporary rhyming poetry. I think it had its time and place - it ended, for the most part, with the ROmantics, though somce, like Wallace Stevens (when he did it) and Robert Frost did remind us that occasionally rhyming poetry can still have something to say. I now add Frederick Turner to that list. He has brought from the past the very best of Romanticism's (and various other past movements' in poetry) contributions to poetry and made them contemporary. Reading Turner's poems for the first time, I was amazed at how much I loved them. They move a person in a way that people have not been moved by poetry in decades, at least. We feel as though this poetry indeed does touch us, that we can related to it, and yet discover so much more about ourselves and the world that was hidden before Turner uncovered them for us. These are poems that everyone should read, for they will remind us that the world is indeed a beautiful place to live and to uncover the small personal truths that make the world interesting and our lives worth living.

Turner writes elegant poetry accesible to any reader.
Readers of Hadean Eclogues will be drawn into the descriptions of the world and of human nature with great ease. Turner writes elegant poetry, which consistently reveals his attention to details in the environment. Each poem is carefully crafted to highlight the best means of expressing his ideas, making the merger of form and content seamless, and each poem clear. Writing , as he does about the lived world, Turner engages the reader in speculation about such questions as what is beauty? where is it to be found? , and what are the parameters of human experience and intellect? Turner's vision of the world is reminiscent of Blakes's and Shelley's , which when combined with the eyes of Wordsworth and Coleridge, yield beautiful poetry by a modern master.

Hark! the Herald Angels Sing/Carols for Christmas
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (Juv) (September, 1993)
Authors: London National Gallery, Barrie Carson Turner, and Barbie C. Turner
Average review score:

A book for both music and art lovers
This is a beautiful book and gives us the words and music to 18 popular Christmas Carols. The arrangements are for piano, guitar and recorder. I personally had less than a year of piano, but can slowly pick out a few of these pieces. I'm sure that someone with just a little more training would be able to play everything.

My friend Jan, gave me this as a Christmas gift because I love to sing and it reminded us of a time when a group of friends spent time around the piano singing carols together. One of the nice points about this book is that in many cases up to 6 verses of the songs are given so that you can spend as much time as you like on your favorite carols without repeating the words.

What really makes this book exceptional are the wonderful illustrations that accompany each composition. These are of paintings that are in the National Gallery in London. A few of the pieces are: Christ Glorified in Heaven by Fra Angelico; The Madonna of Humility by Lippo di Dalmasio; and A Winter Scene by Isack van Ostade. The index of the book gives the artist, and a bit of information on each of the paintings.

I highly recommend this book to musicians and anyone interested in art.

Terrific Christmas Carol piano arrangements
If you love sitting down at the piano and playing Christmas Carols, this book is a wonderful change of pace. The arrangements are quite unusual, with jazz influences, but quite recognizable, and singable. Since I love to sight read, these were challenging, but not difficult. Usually, by the third verse, I had all the notes right. The photos are beautiful, and all the major carols are included. In addition, there were a few unfamiliar carols. The words to all the verses are on the facing page if anyone wants to sing along. A real pleasure to the eyes and ears!

The Heritage of World Civilization, Combined (5th Edition)

The perfet good to aquire a good general overview of History
I abhorred History when I was at school. When I've matured and grown more realist I've started to consider the importance of history to try understand what happens around me. I started with The Penguin History of the World" by J.M. Roberts; I don't recommend that book for beginners though it's a good book (I actually hadn't courage enough to finish it, it exists in audiobook too). This book is written by five american scholars which I think gives it a more general scope than others written by a single author. It includes a CD-ROM with the whole book plus a multimedia summary of human history read by a beautiful voice, photographs, Questionnaires, Quizzes, maps and the Complete Webster's New World Dictionary. There's an exclusive webpage for the book with quizzes, add-on reports and links to other history websites, there you can have your questions answered and your exercises corrected (I haven't used it yet though). Sincerely I didn't expect this book to be so good. The CD-ROM is the same for each of the separate books or for the complete version, so, buying the first or second part alone you have the full CD-ROM encompassing all world history.

A fantastic book! I loved it!
No book captures the authentity of world civilizations as this one does. A masterpiece

I Heard It Through the Grapevine: Rumor in African-American Culture
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (September, 1993)
Author: Patricia A. Turner
Average review score:

Wonderful even-handed review of myopia in all races!
Dr. Patricia Turner's overview of rumor in the white communities and black communities of the past is excellent. She traces themes down through time, showing us how we all are grabbed and held prisoner by what we want to believe. Her delineation of what divides "them" from "us" is thought-provoking--and we all should be greatly intrigued by the people in her book who believe what they believe, in spite of logic and factual material available to them. We need more books like this and more authors like her. This should be required reading in a wide range of courses everywhere, because rumor is alive and well.

Excellent Discussion of African American Urban Legends
I read this book a few years ago as part of research I was doing on urban legends. While Jan Brunvand's books are the most cited references for urban legends, he focuses mostly on ULs vectored by white, usually middle class, people. Turner, on the other hand, focuses specifically on ULs vectored in the black community. I thought this book was quite well written, and the commentary and analysis of the ULs were spot on. I highly reccomend this book
